University Technology Property & Travel Abroad

For many students, international travel can be an important part of the academic experience. Similarly, NEOMED faculty and staff may travel abroad on University business, to conduct research, or while representing the University at academic conferences or other activities.

International travel has many benefits, but it also brings some degree of risk, especially regarding the security of technology resources, including University data, laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. In addition to increased opportunities for loss or theft, these devices are put at risk because they may use networks that may be managed by entities that monitor and capture network traffic for malicious purposes. In addition to technical challenges, several legal issues affect the transport of technology and the use of encryption in foreign locations. Depending on where you travel to, your devices, including your laptop, tablet, smartphone, and data, may be vulnerable to searches, confiscation, and duplication.

For these reasons, students are not permitted to bring NEOMED-issued laptops/computers abroad. NEOMED employees should contact the Help Desk at least two weeks in advance of their travels where there is justified, business need to review options.
